Future Trend Shaping Healthcare Delivery in the U.S.

The U.S. healthcare industry is undergoing considerable changes as the focus on both inpatient and outpatient care continues to accelerate. Four key factors influence the future design of new medical centers and the renovation of existing ones:

  1. Advanced methods of healthcare delivery

  2. New technologies and treatments

  3. Changes in healthcare reimbursement

  4. Evolving social, cultural, and environmental factors

In the first decade of the 21st century, the healthcare industry experienced unprecedented growth, with over $20 billion invested to upgrade, renovate, and replace aging hospitals, and to accommodate new patient care technologies and treatment modalities. This includes major shifts toward improved inpatient comfort and expanded outpatient services.

Program planning and architectural design, in collaboration with our existing hospital partner, will be significantly influenced by the following global trends:

  • Driven by cost reduction, reimbursement models, patient preferences, an aging U.S. and international population, and improved outpatient services, the proportion of patients admitted for inpatient treatment will continue to decline. Patient care is becoming more specialized around emerging treatment modalities.

  • Consequently, patients admitted for inpatient services will increasingly be frailer, more critically ill, both local and international, and will require a higher level of care with potentially longer lengths of stay.

  • There will be continued growth in single-bed, high-hospitality inpatient rooms to improve privacy, safety, infection control, and the ability to accommodate varying acuity levels—including conversion to intensive care units. These rooms will also support greater integration of family members as informal caregivers.

  • Outpatient care will see concentrated growth in specialty-related service centers within the medical corridor, utilizing advanced equipment such as MRIs and dialysis machines, alongside support services like laboratories, diagnostic imaging, and physical therapy.

  • Patient care models will evolve to include expanded roles for physician assistants, nursing assistants, and the integration of electronic medical records for rapid dissemination of information across facilities. Telehealth services will also play an increasingly vital role.

  • Modern hospitality services will be essential to accommodate international patients, ensuring comfort and accessibility.

  • Lastly, research and trade conventions will serve as key platforms for education and the marketing of the latest medical equipment and treatment innovations.
